Kevin Morgan

mogsbonesmallKevin Morgan was born on Anglesey, North Wales, settling in the Midlands at the age of seven. The local brass band, Ratby, ran a junior band at the school, conducted by the inspirational Betty Anderson and Kevin was encouraged to join on the last remaining spare instrument – a trombone. This eventually led to positions in the National Youth Brass Band and the Leicestershire Schools Symphony Orchestra where his teacher was Les Piper.

Despite embarking on an engineering degree, Kevin realised that music was important to him (and a lot less difficult than mathematics) and changed to a music degree at City University, London. This was followed by a postgraduate year at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. During this period he studied with Peter Gane and Eric Crees and gained positions with the European Communuty Youth Orchestra and the Young Musicians Symphony Orchestra.

After a brief career as a security guard followed by a tour of The Sound of Music, Kevin auditioned for the Bournmouth Symphony Orchestra, trialled for two weeks and started the job in April 1987.
During his thirty years in the BSO, Kevin has knocked down and nearly rebuilt a house, written a dictionary of plumbing expletives and scored three runs for the BSO cricket team. He is currently learning how to use a home recording studio without shouting and spends many hours in the attic looking for his college trombone quartet arrangements.

Kevin has performed with many of the UK’s symphony orchestras (LSO, LPO, CBSO, BBCNOW) and has appeared as a soloist with a number of brass and wind bands in the South West. In addition, as a result of the Bournemouth Symphony’s outreach work, he gained an MA in Music Education and regularly visits schools to present both performance and curriculum linked projects. He has tutored youth orchestras and brass bands (including the National Youth Brass Band of Wales), given masterclasses for the National Youth Orchestra and at the Guildhall School of Music.

He has written a trombone tutor “Zen and the Art of the Trombone”.

As a composer, Kevin’s music has been performed by Kokoro (the modern music ensemble of the BSO), the Mini BSO (the BSO’s five piece education ensemble), Bournemouth Symphonic Brass and various brass and trombone ensembles in the UK and USA. He has also written for various media projects as well as creating all the original music for his album “Off the beaten tracks”.

He is currently the Musical Director of the Moonlight Swing Band.
